Week Two: Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Munich, and Wolfgangsee

Week two contained a weekend full of adventures!

Our Thursday excursion consisted of a visit to Hallstatt, a lovely little town resting between a mountainside and a lake. It was there we also toured Salzburg's oldest salt mine, which was delicious as well as informative. Not to mention the only way to get from mine to mine was via slide.









In addition to Hallstatt, we also walked through Bad Ischl, a town housing several of Austria's Kaisers. The German group split from the History students at this point, and our homework assignment was to visit and order coffee and cake at Café Zauner (difficult, right?). And so, with bellies full of Eis-Schokolade and Torte, we returned to Salzburg to prepare for our trip the next day to Munich.













And Munich was sehr toll! What a beautiful city, combined with hundreds of years of history as well as modern amenities. While it was over ninety degrees with sixty-precent humidity, we still managed to have fun, paying visits to the Olympic stadium, Englischer Garden, Marienplatz, and, of course...

...the Munich Hofbräuhaus! With the best beer and ox goulash I've ever had. Not to say I've had much experience with ox goulash, but it was still delicious! We traveled back to Austria and Salzburg that night, and the following morning we took the van to our next destination.













Wolfgangsee! It was another ninety degree day, so we packed up a picnic and spent the afternoon swimming, playing soccer, and relaxing on the picturesque lakeside.









And so ended week two! Week three has come and gone with plenty of adventures as well, including our weekend in Vienna and Budapest. Tune in later for updates!

Week One: Hohenwerfen and the Eisriesenwelt

Today marks my second week abroad, my second week away from North America, and my second week living in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe: Salzburg, Austria. It's amazing to think I've seen, heard, and experienced so much in such a short amount of time, and yet time seems to be slipping from my fingertips with each passing day. I've already visited several beautiful villages around Salzburg, with the first being my excursion to Hohenwerfen Castle and the Eisriesenwelt.

Hohenwerfen, as shown to the left, is a castle standing high on a hill, overlooking the village of Werfen below. The castle is nearly a thousand years old. Our group toured the ancient grounds, exploring the chapel, armory, bell tower, and more. It was informative and fun, but the best part of the trip to Hohenwerfen was...

The falconry show! After our tour of the castle, we witnessed falcons, eagles, and vultures soaring across the sky, replicating the Medieval practice of hunting with birds.

After our excursion through Hohenwerfen, 

we took a bus through the winding hills of Werfen, above the castle and into the Eisriesenwelt. In English this translates to the “World of Ice Giants." Mind you--this cave rests at the top of Hochkogel mountain, which is in the Alps-- so we had to take a cable car and then hike to the top of the mountain. The total altitude is 1,656 meters, or about 5,433 feet. Needless to say, after a morning of touring the castle and an afternoon hiking through the ice caves, we were all pretty tired. But holy moly Batman, was it worth it. These ice caves are amazing geological formations, first created over 100 million years ago. One can see why the Austrians call this the World of Ice Giants-- it is truly spectacular.

Öffnungstage und Zeiten: Montag bis Samstag von 7.00 bis 21.00, und Sonntag von 8.00 bis 21.00

Von dem UP Zentrum geht man rechts die Merianstraße entlang. Dann geht man durch den Dr.-Hans-Lechner-Park, und dann links in die Bayerhamerstraße. Wenn man zur Schallmooster Hauptstraße, geht man rechts. Dann geht man über die Staatbrücke. Geht man links in die Rudolfskai, dann rechts in die Klampfererg. Schließlich kommt man in den Alter Markt, wo man findet Café Tomaselli. 

Als ein österreichisches Kaffeegetränk probierte ich eine Tasse Tomaselli Melange. Sie schmeckte nicht so stark, aber es war immer lecker. Das Kaffeegetränk ist Mokka mit Milch und Schlagobers. Wir waren etwa eine Stunde da. Als bestellte ich das Kaffeegetränk, ich sagte dem Kellner, “Ich möchte gern eine Melange.” Als ich bezahlen wollte, sagte ich, “Zahlen, bitte.”

Das Café hatte keine Wartezeit. Unser Kellner, Herr Olaf, war sehr professionell. Ich werde natürlich anderen dieses Café empfehlen. Ich werde nur anderen das Kaffeegetränk empfehlen, die lieber nicht stark Kaffee trinken. Ich werde mir vielleicht das Kaffeegetränk nochmals bestellen.

Unsere Reise in den Laden

Der Name des Ladens ist Metzgerei Strobl. Dieses Ladens ist in der Franz-Josef-Straße 19. Metzgerei Strobl ist Montag bis Freitag um 7.30 bis 13.00 und von 15.00 bis 18.00, und Samstag um 7.00-12.00. Von dem UP Zentrum geht man westlich die Merianstraße entlang. Dann geht man links eine kurze Strecke in die Pauernfeindstraße. Durch den Dr.-Hans-Lechner-Park geht man, und dann links in die Bayerhamerstraße. Wenn man zur Sterneckstraße kommt, geht man rechts. Die Sterneckstraße entlang bis Parcelsusstraße, wo man links abbiegt. Dann kommt man zur Franz-Josef-Straße. An der Ecke der Franz-Josef-Straße und Paracelsusstraße findet man Metzgerei Strobl. In der Metzgerei Strobl kauft man viele Fleischsorten, Bröte, und Käse. Man kann Wienerschnitzel mit Kartoffel Salat für €6, Hamburger Sammeln für €2,50, oder Brothendl mit Salat für €5 zu kaufen. Für Getränke kann man Cola, Wein, und Wasser kaufen. Als Anna und ich diesen Laden besuchten, war er geschlossen, aber ich hätte Wienerschnitzel gekauft. Der Laden sah sehr sauber aus, aber er war auch sehr klein. Werden wir anderen diesen Laden empfehlen? Wahrscheinlich. Ich wüsste mehr wissen, wenn er nicht geschlossen wäre.
